What’s Next: It’s beginning to look a lot like December! ❄️ Catch up on our work before the New Year

December 4, 2023

Seasons Greetings from the team at NextGen Policy! We hope you are looking forward to a festive time with family and friends during the upcoming holidays! This is the final month of 2023 and we wanted to share some of the exciting work we are undertaking over the next few weeks as well as take a look back at a few recent happenings – from workshops to help student loan borrowers, to upcoming digital equity-focused community events and much more!

We also need to let you know that we are hearing very troublesome and concerning news about the state budget – revenues are down significantly and it appears that the state budget deficit will be much worse than originally projected. To get the full picture, we will have to wait until January 10th, when the Governor officially releases his budget. At that time, we will know the exact size of the deficit and the resulting implications. So, for now, let’s just take a look at What’s Next at NextGen:

★ Thank You for Celebrating Giving Tuesday with Us: We’d like to express our gratitude for the support we received from many generous donors during this year’s Giving Tuesday celebration. We deeply appreciate your support and standing up for our mission to help California’s most vulnerable populations and historically underserved communities. Our team plans to hit the ground running in 2024 and will continue working to build a more prosperous, equitable, and climate-friendly California for all. If you weren’t able to make your donation before Giving Tuesday, it’s not too late – you can make a donation anytime to support NextGen Policy.

★ College Students – Make Your Voices Heard: Next year, we’ll be going all in to address the issue of “institutional debt”, debt owed directly to colleges and universities that if left unpaid can prevent students from enrolling in classes, receiving their diploma, as well as subjecting them to aggressive debt collection practices. We will work with Assemblymember Pacheco on AB 1160 to curtail these harmful, anti-student practices. You can use your voice to make a difference today – if you or a friend have ever owed any form of institutional debt to your college or university and, as a result, experienced harmful debt collection practices, please take the time to fill out our brief survey.

Upcoming Affordable Connectivity Program Events: We continue to help eligible Californians apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal benefit program that provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service. We’re partnering with various State Senate and Assembly Member offices to host ACP enrollment events throughout the state, because every Californian deserves equitable access to affordable, reliable, high-quality internet service – no matter their income level or where they live! Here are a few of our upcoming enrollment events:
  • Richmond: Tuesday, Dec 12th from 2:00pm – 7:30pm
Location: DeJean Middle School, 3400 Macdonald Ave, Richmond, CA 9480
  • Sacramento: Saturday, Dec 16th from 10:00am – 2:00pm
Location: Choices Charter School, 4425 Laurelwood Way, Sacramento, CA 95864
  • Los Angeles: Saturday, December 16th from 9:00am – 12:00pm
Location: North Hills Community Park, 8756 Parthenia Pl, North Hills, CA 91343

★ Member Spotlight: We would like to extend our congratulations to the new Chairs of the Assembly Standing Committees for the 2023-24 Regular Session. ★ What’s Next: It’s hard to believe the year has almost come to an end! The NextGen team will be hard at work from now until the holidays as we wrap up our 2023 projects and get a head start on next year’s work – stay tuned for this year’s final issue of What’s Next coming your way later this month with a more detailed outline of our greatest and proudest 2023 accomplishments that YOU helped us achieve!

★ Our Mission: NextGen Policy fights for progressive policy change to address environmental, social, racial, gender, and economic inequities through justice-centered legislative advocacy, grassroots partnerships, and democratic civic engagement.

Thank you for being a part of our journey toward a more equitable California. As we continue to push for progressive policy change, we invite you to make a difference by donating to support our organization. Your contribution will directly impact our efforts to address environmental, social, and economic inequities throughout the state.
