Last year, California took a bold step in the fight against climate change by passing two crucial laws: the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB 253) and the Climate-Related Financial Risk Disclosure Act (SB 261). These laws require large companies to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks.
Now, there is a proposal to delay the implementation of these vital laws by two years. This delay is unnecessary and harmful to our climate goals. The world is already experiencing record-breaking heat, more frequent natural disasters, and billions of dollars in economic losses due to climate change. We simply cannot afford to wait.
California has always been a leader in climate action, and it’s crucial that we maintain this position. Many other countries are moving forward with similar disclosure requirements, and we risk falling behind if we delay. These laws already include generous timelines for companies to prepare, so further postponement is unwarranted.
Please add your name and email to our letter urging Governor Gavin Newsom, State Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire, State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, and Assembly Budget Committee Chair Jesse Gabriel to reject the proposal to delay these laws. Your voice can make a difference in ensuring that large corporations are held accountable for their impact on our climate.
Together, we can keep California at the forefront of climate action and transparency.
