SACRAMENTO Today NextGen California applauds Governor Newsom for signing AB 1207, historic climate legislation that will extend and strengthen the state’s Cap-and-Invest program. The passage of AB 1207 is a testament to California’s continuing leadership in the fight against climate change. This bill advances California’s climate goals by steering the state’s economy towards an affordable clean energy future, while driving critical climate investments in our communities for the next 20 years.

Championed by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) and Senator Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara), AB 1207 reflects a broad consensus among a wide range of environmental, energy, housing, transit, labor, and business leaders. There is still much work to be done to navigate a clean energy transition, but with the extension of the Cap-and-Invest program, California takes another important step on the path to achieving carbon neutrality.

Statement from NextGen California Policy Advisor, Chloe Ames:

“Cap-and-Invest is one of California’s cornerstone climate programs, and we applaud Governor Newsom for championing climate priorities by signing AB 1207. Now, our strengthened Cap-and-Invest program will better advance our state’s climate goals while driving climate investments and lowering electricity bills, proving that California can lead on both climate action and energy affordability. While more work remains to strengthen community air protections, this marks a powerful step forward—one that will help secure meaningful, lasting climate action for California over the next 20 years.”

Statement from NextGen California Policy Advisor, Jamie Pew:

“AB 1207 will make Cap-and-Invest a more pragmatic and cost-effective solution in the fight to combat the climate crisis. The bill’s signage demonstrates true climate leadership from Governor Newsom and California’s legislative leaders: first they tuned out the noise being made by Big Oil and a hostile federal government, then they rolled up their sleeves and got to work designing a program that will better serve all Californians.”
