The Sacramento-based nonprofit is urging Californians to take action against Big Oil’s plan which will raise prices, pollute the air, and cut public transit

SACRAMENTO – This week, NextGen California launched a new online ad campaign with a message for Californians: it’s time to fight back against Big Oil’s dirty plan.

“Big Oil has spent years putting profits ahead of the health and safety of Californians, and now they are trying to weaken one of our state’s most successful climate programs,” said Arnold Sowell Jr., Executive Director of NextGen California. “We are joining in the fight against Big Oil’s dirty campaign because the choice is clear – people over profits. We will not stand idly by while Big Oil spends millions lobbying for policies that increase their bottom line and decrease funding for community clean air programs, affordable housing and public transit, and electricity rebates. We urge Governor Newsom and the Legislature to continue to fight for Californians and protect the Cap-and-Invest program.”

NextGen California, a nonprofit organization that fights for progressive changes to create a more equitable, prosperous, and climate resilient California for all, is sounding the alarm on the need for Californians to use their voices and urge Governor Newsom and State Legislators to protect the state’s Cap-and-Invest program from Big Oil.

For almost two decades, California’s Cap-and-Invest program has helped the state lower harmful air emissions, increase affordability, and stay on track to meet its climate goals. In contrast, Big Oil has used their windfall profits from the high gas prices being paid by Californians to spend record-breaking amounts of money to lobby for more industry giveaways.

While it’s a challenge to compete with Big Oil’s war chest of money to push their profit margin and pollution agenda, NextGen California is spending hundreds on an online ad campaign (compared to industry’s tens of millions spent on lobbying) to raise the alarm and ensure that Californians are aware of the harm Big Oil will cause to the state if they succeed in siphoning money away from key climate protection programs like Cap-and-Invest.

The ad campaign also directs viewers to NextGen California’s website where they are hosting a letter writing campaign that allows concerned Californians to send a message directly to Governor Newsom and State Legislators asking them to protect the state’s climate future and place people and communities over big polluters. Learn more about NextGen California’s campaign to protect the Cap-and-Invest program, and take action today to make a difference.
