The Sheriff Democracy and Diversity Act (SB 271 – Wiener) would allow any eligible registered voter to run for sheriff and then let voters choose who is most qualified to hold the office.

Just like other elected offices in California can come from many different backgrounds, a successful candidate for sheriff should also. Sherriffs can manage thousands of employees — most of whom are not even law enforcement officials.
