Act Now to Protect California’s Cap-and-Invest Program and Community Funding from Big Oil
The Cap-and-Invest program was designed to protect our clean air, increase affordability, and move towards a healthier future. BUT, a new California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulation puts our state climate goals at risk and billions of dollars could be handed over to polluting industries instead of our communities under these program updates.
Big Oil is using their windfall profits from high gas prices to lobby legislators to defund critical public transit and affordable housing programs so they can pollute more. We need you to fight back.
What Happened:
For two decades, California’s Cap-and-Invest program served as a backstop to ensure we meet our state’s climate goals while generating critical funding for community programs. By charging industries a price to burn fossil fuels, the program limits the amount of pollution emitted while raising money to reduce electricity bills and invest in clean energy and climate resilience projects. Learn more about the Cap-and-Invest program and our work to protect California’s climate.
Now our state’s climate commitments and the funding for these climate projects are at risk. CARB’s recent update to Cap-and-Invest could result in up to $4 billion in additional incentives to polluters while generating significantly less money for our statewide programs that support public transportation, affordable housing, air quality protection, and electricity bill relief. We need our legislators to fight back and ensure that Cap-and-Invest advances our state’s climate goals and the public programs that we rely on!
Your voice matters; take action today. Tell Governor Newsom and your representatives to protect Californians over big polluters.
