SB 364 (Skinner) – The Free School Meals for All Act
- Location: This bill is no longer needed because it was enacted in the state budget
- Status update: Good news – Governor Newsom’s 2021 Budget included a historic $650 million dollar investment to make California the first state in the nation to provide free, universal meals to all K-12 students! Mission accomplished, thanks to your advocacy!

SB 17 (Pan) – The Office of Racial Equity Bill
- Location: Assembly Appropriations Committee
- Status update: We need to work to ensure the Assembly Appropriations Committee passes this bill.
- Next steps: Urge passage of this bill out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee and on to the full Assembly for a final floor vote.
AB 263 (Arambula) – The Health Oversight and Leadership in Detention Act
- Location: This bill currently sits on Senate floor
- Status update: This bill is on its 3rd reading — which means AB 263 now awaits a final floor vote in the Senate before it returns to the State Assembly for a final vote.
- Next steps: We’re working on final amendments to help ensure the bill’s passage. The good news is there’s bipartisan support for this bill, so things are looking good.
AB 256 (Kalra, Kamlager, Rivas, Santiago) – Racial Justice Act for All
- Location: Senate Appropriations Committee
- Status update: This bill currently sits “on the Suspense File” — meaning it’s on pause somewhat — and its fate is in the committee’s hands.
- Next steps: Urge passage of this bill out of the Senate Appropriations Committee and on to the full Senate for a final floor vote.
SB 2 (Bradford, Atkins) – The Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act

- Status update: We need to work to ensure the Assembly Appropriations Committee passes this bill.

AB 469 (Reyes, McCarty, Quirk-Silva) – FAFSA/CADAA Completion
- Location: Senate Appropriations Committee
- Status update: Good news! The state budget included requiring school districts to work to ensure FAFSA/CADAA completion.
- Next steps: We will work with partners to help school districts enact the new law.
AB 46 (Rivas) – California Youth Empowerment Act
- Location: Senate Appropriations Committee

SB 222 (Dodd) – Low Income Rate Water Assistance Program

SB 56 (Durazo, Arambula) – Medi-Cal Eligibility
- Location: Assembly Appropriations Committee
- Status update: Good news! This bill was funded in the budget! Mission accomplished thanks to your advocacy!
- Next steps: The budget expanded Medi-Cal for more undocumented adults but we’ll continue working until ALL Californians are covered.
AB 4 (Arambula, Bonta, Chiu, Gipson, Lorena Gonzalez, Reyes, Santiago) – Medi-Cal Eligibility
- Location: Senate Appropriations Committee
- Status update: Good news! This bill was funded in the budget! Mission accomplished thanks to your advocacy!
- Next steps: The budget expanded Medi-Cal for additional undocumented adults but we’ll continue working until ALL Californians are covered.
AB 424 (Stone) – Private Student Loan Collections Reform Act
- Location: Senate Appropriations Committee
- Status update: This bill currently sits “on the Suspense File” — meaning it’s on pause somewhat — and its fate is in the committee’s hands.
- Next steps: Urge passage of this bill — student borrowers should call, tweet, or write to Senate Appropriations Chair Portantino to pass protections for those with private student loans.
AB 1456 (Medina, McCarty) – The Cal Grant Reform Act
